Senior & Inter-State Carrom Championship in India

(SK Sharma)

B. Radhakrishnan (Tamil Nadu) won the 36th Senior & Inter-State Carrom Championship held at Kolkata from 19th to 24th March 2007.  R. Arokiaraj of Banks' Sports Board (former World No.2) was Runners-up.  Rashmi Kumari, who recently was recruited under sports quota for achieving excellence in carrom (former World Champion) won the women title while Ayesha Mohd (former SAARC Champion) was Runners-up.
 
We are to going to our first national carrom activity of the year (2007-08) in June 2007.  It would be 'Inter-Zonal National Carrom Championship' to be held from 11th to 13th June 2007 at New Delhi. In this championship, men and women teams of six zones i.e. North Zone, West Zone, South Zone, East Zone, North East Zone and Institution Zone would be participating.  Players who secured top six positions both in men and women categories in each zonal championship became eligible to participate in this championship.  This national championship has deen declared as the Ranking Championship in India w.e.f. 2007-08.
 
Next programme is 35th Sub-junior National & Inter-State Carrom Championship to be held from 2nd to 7th July 2007 at Faridabad (Haryana).  In this national championships boys and girls under 14 years and 12 years of age from 30 States of India would be vying for different positions in six events of the six days Championship. Forty-two carrom boards would be used for this championship.
 
India would also be hosting 11th SAARC Countries Carrom Championship at Nagpur (Maharashtra) from 1st to 3rd September 2007 and the 2nd Asian Carrom Championship from 5th to 8th September 2007 at Raipur (Chattisgarh).  Few new countries like Bhutan, Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia are likely to join.  There would be seven events in both the championships including Mixed Doubles.  Three men and three women players will represent each country in both the championships.
